The tanbō (短棒), also known as tambo or short stick, is a stick that measures between 45 to 60 cm in length. The manner of wielding it forms a standalone martial art, known as tanbō-jutsu. This weapon can be used to strike, perform a lock, strangle, block, or throw. It can be utilized in the practice of certain martial arts, such as aikido, jujutsu, and hapkido. This weapon can be wielded either singly or in pairs (one tanbō in each hand).
The tanbō could also serve as a diversionary weapon; indeed, it could be thrown to provoke a reflexive response, allowing for a follow-up sword attack.
The tanbō can be compared to the short stick used in arnis (eskrima). Like the latter, it is sometimes used to replace a weapon, such as a short sword, while avoiding the hazards of a real weapon.
