Kamayari is a type of yari (Japanese spear) used in feudal Japan. It features a distinct sickle-like shape, which is responsible for its name.
It is still used today in various traditional Japanese martial arts styles (koryu), some of which are well-known, such as Hōzōin-ryū, Kashima Shintō-ryū, and Suihasu-ryū.
The hooks are usually large enough to grab the head, neck, or jaw (when targeting a tree) or the limbs of a swordsman on the ground, which distinguishes it from other types of yari. The kama-yari was also used to hook knights and dismount them.
